That may not sound like a big deal to folks in some states, but in Maine, the historic sucess rate to bag even one deer per year is 15% - 20%. I have hunted many years without harvesting a deer. This deer is also special since it is a "big woods" deer. My other three were expanded archery zone deer where there is a much higher concentration of deer. Taking this little buck was also special as I was with a 15 year old kid I have taken hunting for three years, but this was the first time I showed him what a deer looked like up close! Perhaps next year the deer will walk by his stand. I harvested this on the banks of the Ducktrap River in Belmont Maine. I heard footsteps on the other side of the river at 3:00 and got ready, but then heard so much grunting I'm pretty sure it was a hunter working a tube. The steps sort of sounded more human than deer-like as well.... at 3:20 I heard "my" deer on the other side of my stand (away from the river) and when the wind made some noise in the branches, I stood up and saw it feeding 60 yards away in some firs. It slowly fed towards me in heavy timber and I shot it at 50 yards when it stopped in an opening. It dropped right away as the 30-06 bullet blew through the bottom of the spine and out through the far lung. It was dead before it hit the ground. Length: 00:46
