i have never hunted bear before and i would like to start this spring, i live in washington. can anyone help me?

I am in a similar situation, although I live in New Brunswick Canada. I too had a few questions maybe some of you could answer.

I have a .308 I use to hunt deer/moose, what would be a suitable bullet for black bear, I have read that good penetration is required but I am not sure what weight or style of bullet is best suited for black bear while using a .308.
