Hello guys. I have a question. When turkey hunting, should I shoot the hens or not ? Of course I am interested only in the big gobblers. But some say that the more hens the less chances of the gobbler responding to your calls. What do you think/know ?

yeah, I'd shoot the hens. It's like whitetail hunting. The more does you shoot, the less competition for food the bucks get, and the better herd ratio you have. I suppose it's the same for turkeys. Plus, a horny gobbler with no hens will be more likely to respond to your pleading yelps

Shooting a few hens is a good idea - just shooting gobblers all the time leaves a flock of mostly hens and few gobblers.
Think how big the fall population of mature gobblers would be if all those gobblers weren't shot the previous spring. There's nothing more challenging to hunt than mature wild turkey gobblers in the fall.

well if you shoot the hen then you won't have a long beard so you will have a trophy if you shoot a long beard

I didn't go turkey hunting before, but I suppose that shooting the hens will alert the gobbler and make him even more careful so your chances for a successful hunt will decrease.
